Orange County, Calif., December 17, 2008 – The Village of Hope, a state-of-the-art facility for the homeless that recently celebrated its grand opening in September 2008, is preparing to celebrate its first Christmas. The 200 formerly homeless men, women and children who have found refuge at this innovative facility are eager to give thanks and celebrate this year’s holiday season with a warm meal and bed. However, the facility remains in dire need of donations to ensure that residents have the proper nutrition and supplies to help them continue on the path to self sufficiency.
“In the true spirit of Christmas , we are making a plea to those fortunate enough to have all that they need this Christmas to give to those struggling daily to feed their families and change their lives for the better,” said Jim Palmer, president of the Orange County Rescue Mission and creator of The Village of Hope concept. “The Village of Hope functions solely on private donations and is in constant need of monetary, food and non-food gifts to ensure our residents have the chance they deserve.”
The Village of Hope at the former Tustin Marine Corp Air Station includes 192 beds, a child development center, playground, parent education center, vocational training classrooms, health care facility, donation warehouse, cafeteria with an outdoor dining center, and support offices. Residents here are considered “students” who participate in the Village of Hope’s two-year rehabilitation program to overcome their personal obstacles and succeed in daily life, while keeping their families intact.
“There are so many stories of triumph over struggle here at the Village of Hope,” added Palmer. “The residents here are no different than you and me, but they need our help to heal what hunger and poverty has done to them. It is more important than ever that the community of Orange County comes together to give these people and their children the tools they need to succeed.”
