Would-be burglars smash storefront but are scared off by a cleaning crew, police say

A pair of would-be burglars failed to smash their way into an appliance store in Costa Mesa early Tuesday, police said.
The pair pulled up to the business in the 3300 block of Hyland Avenue about 2:30 a.m., Costa Mesa police Sgt. Mike Manson said.
They pulled out a bat or an ax and tried to shatter glass in the business’ storefront so they could get inside, according to police.
But the would-be burglars didn’t realize there was a cleaning crews inside the business, Manson said.
“Once they saw the cleaning crew they got spooked,” Manson said.
The pair then got back into the Ford Mustang they had arrived in and drove off toward the 405 Freeway, according to police.
Witnesses said both would-be burglars wore hoodies, Manson said. One hoodie was black; the other was red, and at least one of the would-be burglars was male, according to police.
