USC freshmen preview: Linebacker Porter Gustin could break into rotation

This month we will preview each USC freshman who will join the team in training camp.
Player: Porter Gustin
Position: Outside linebacker
Number: No. 45
Height: 6 feet 5
Weight: 250 pounds
High school: Salem Hills
Hometown: Elk Ridge, Utah
High school: Gustin was named an Army All-American at Salem Hills High, where he played linebacker and quarterback.
Gustin made 29 tackles for losses, intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.
He passed for 2,864 yards and 22 touchdowns, with seven interceptions, and rushed for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns in 92 carries.
USC position breakdown: Gustin will compete for a spot in the rotation at outside linebacker, according to the spring depth chart. The Trojans return fourth-year juniors Scott Felix, who started five games last season, and Jabari Ruffin, who spent the season sidelined after undergoing knee surgery. Redshirt freshman Don Hill, who was sidelined during spring practice, also will contend for time.
Season prediction: Gustin will be a part of the defensive rotation and will play on special teams.
