Corona Centennial debuted in our/my boys’ basketball top 25 rankings this week and the Huskies didn’t make us/me regret it Tuesday night, running away from Corona Santiago, 72-51, in a Mountain View League opener. Shannon Sharpe was at it again, totaling 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals for Centennial.

Santiago is a solid team. Throw in the crosstown rivalry thing and it was a very impressive win for the Huskies, who have only eight games remaining on their schedule. I know it feels like the football season just ended for Centennial, which advanced to the state Division I bowl championship, but the basketball playoffs are only a month away.

Right now, the Huskies are the only Division II-A team in our/my top 25, so that bodes well for a top seed should they run the table in the MVL. Roosevelt and Corona may give them a run for their money, but I don’t think they’re better than Santiago.
