An 80-year-old Berkeley man died, apparently of a heart attack, when he and two others jumped into San Francisco Bay after his 15-foot homemade motor boat exploded about a half-mile east of Alcatraz Island, the Coast Guard reported. Passing boaters dived into the 50-degree water to help Thomas Mackay; his 75-year-old wife, Mary, and Samuel Natel, of El Sobrante, whose age was not available. Mackay was reported dead on arrival at a local hospital. His wife was in good condition, and Natel was treated and released.
