HILVERSUM, Netherlands — A circus elephant hurled an 83-year-old man onto a railway platform in this central Dutch city Thursday, inflicting serious head injuries, police said.
Police spokesman Henk Bontekoning said the victim, who was not identified, came too close while watching elephants being taken off a special train carrying animals for West Germany’s Krone Circus, which is touring the Netherlands.
An elephant grabbed the man in its trunk and smashed him onto the platform, Bontekoning said.
