Hollywood Not a City

In regard to the Aug. 8 article, “Actor Seeking Stamp of Approval for Hollywood Postmark” (by Lynn Simross), the pertinent fact should have been more forcefully emphasized: Hollywood is not a city, but only a district of Los Angeles. It has had that (district) status since 1910 when it was annexed to Los Angeles proper as little more than a glorified real estate development.
Since Hollywood is only a district, its status is identical to that of other similar districts like Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Echo Park. That means Hollywood exists only as a postal zone of Los Angeles and nothing more.
The attempt to burden the Postal Service with providing an over-represented, overexposed and overindulged district with the special status of its own separate postmark is nonsense.
