Tennis Roundup : Lendl Keeps Rolling Along; Smid, Gilbert Also Advance

U.S. Open champion Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia reached the semifinals of the $117,000 Mercedes Cup tennis tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany, Friday with an easy 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ronald Agenor of Haiti.
Tomas Smid, Lendl’s teammate on Czechoslovakia’s Davis Cup squad, advanced by defeating Udo Riglewski of West Germany, 7-5, 7-6, and Brad Gilbert ousted Andreas Maurer of West Germany, 6-0, 6-4.
At Hilton Head Island, S.C., defending champion Jimmy Arias defeated Tim Mayotte, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the final of the $150,000 DuPont All-American championships. He’ll face Gene Mayer, who beat David Pate, 6-2, 6-4.
