Two Tropical Storms in Atlantic Not Seen as Threat to Land Yet

MIAMI — Tropical Storms Fabian and Gloria whirled harmlessly in the Atlantic far from land, and forecasters said Thursday that they expect neither to intensify immediately.
“Neither one of them is showing signs of strengthening,” forecaster Miles Lawrence said. “I don’t want to write Gloria off because it’s coming across the Atlantic and could strengthen at any time, but there’s no indication it’s doing so now.”
Fabian’s top sustained winds remained at 60 m.p.h. Gloria’s top winds, at 40 m.p.h., were pointed toward the Caribbean Sea, about 1,200 miles away.
On Thursday, Fabian was centered about 1,000 miles east of Bermuda, and Gloria was centered about 1,200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
