Heart Recipient Develops Fever

HERSHEY, Pa. — Anthony Mandia, who lived 11 days on the Penn State artificial heart before a human heart donor was found, developed a fever and possible infection today and his condition was downgraded, officials said.
Mandia, who received a donor heart Oct. 28, had been listed as critical but stable before his condition was downgraded to critical but unstable. Doctors planned to return Mandia to the operating room today to drain his chest incision.
