Auditors Charge ‘Misuse, Waste’ in Marine Fund

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — An audit of Camp Pendleton’s Special Services unit, which provides entertainment and recreation for off-duty troops, has turned up what auditors call “continuous misuse and waste” of funds, a camp spokesman reported Thursday.
A Marine Corps audit of the unit’s $5.9-million budget from last October to June said a $5,000 loan was improperly made to a civilian and civilians were allowed to take government cars home overnight.
The money for Special Services units comes mainly from profits of the general merchandise stores on bases worldwide. Military accountants periodically review the fund books.
