Twenty-two people suffered eye injuries after hooligans sprayed a harmful substance at fans and players prior to an English League soccer match between Liverpool and Manchester United, police in Liverpool, England, said.
The incident occured as the Manchester team was arriving by bus at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium.
Television reports said a large quantity of liquid, possibly ammonia, was squirted at the players and fans near the bus. The reports said Manchester United’s manager, Ron Atkinson, was seen to run through the crowds with his eyes streaming, and reserve Clayton Blackmore also was affected.
Police said a 12-year-old boy, who scratched his eyes by rubbing them too vigorously after the attack, was the only one needing medical attention.
