HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TONIGHT : Southern Section Quarterfinals : 5-A Division : Crespi vs. St. Bernard

At Bishop Montgomery High 7:30 p.m.
Crespi (20-4) narrowly avoided being upset in the first round last Friday, rallying to beat Long Beach Wilson, 53-52. Jason Turner leads a balanced scoring attack for the Celts, averaging nearly 14 points a game. St Bernard (17-7), the team seeded fourth, is led by guard David Whitmore, considered one of the finest juniors in the state. Whitmore averages 23 points a game.
4-A Division
Capistrano Valley vs. Rio Mesa
At Moorpark College 7:30 p.m.
Capistrano Valley (26-2), the top-seeded team in the division, has three players who have already signed with Division I schools. John Waikle, a 6-9 center, and Jason Trask, a 6-7 forward, will attend Weber State, while point guard Nathan Call will play at Brigham Young. Rio Mesa (20-5) advanced with a 71-70 overtime win over Culver City.
Simi Valley vs. Rolling Hills
At Miraleste High7:30 p.m.
Rolling Hills (21-5) entered the season with four underclassmen as starters and a coach, Cliff Warren, who had been in the real estate business since 1968. The Titans upset fourth-seeded North, 63-60, in the second round Tuesday. Simi Valley (25-2) had not won a playoff game in 20 years before this season. Don MacLean has scored 40 points in two playoff games.
2-A Division
San Bernardino vs. Calabasas
At Agoura High7:30 p.m.
In its two playoff games, Calabasas (17-7) has scored 99 and 74 points. Junior guard Steve Ward, who led the Valley in scoring at 27.5 points a game, has had games of 36 and 25 to lead the Coyotes. Center Jon Perlstein has 56 points in the two outings. San Bernardino (25-3), the top-seeded team in the division, is seeking its first title ever.
1-A Division
Valley Christian vs. L.A. Baptist
At L.A. Baptist High7:30 p.m.
L.A. Baptist (20-3), the third-seeded team in the division, opened the playoffs last Friday with a 60-53 win over Santa Ynez. The Knights were led by Robert Dodson, who scored 16 points, just above his season average of 15.8. Mark Williamson is the top rebounder. Valley Christian (21-4) advanced with a 70-54 win over Flintridge Prep.
City Section Semifinals
4-A Division
Cleveland vs. San Pedro
At L.A. Sports Arena7:30 p.m.
San Pedro (16-6), the runner-up in the 3-A Division last season, was picked to finish fifth in the Marine League this season. But the Pirates, who tied Carson for the league title, have reached the Sports Arena behind the play of forward Zlatko Josic, guard Damon Whitsitt and center Mike Sestich. This is the farthest Cleveland (15-7) has ever advanced as a 4-A team.
3-A Division
Van Nuys vs. Marshall
At L.A. Wilson High7:30 p.m.
Talk about Marshall (20-4) begins with Jerry Simon. The 6-6 senior, the leading candidate for the 3-A player of the year award, is averaging nearly 38 points a game for the top-seeded Barristers. Van Nuys (13-6), which lost in the semifinals last season, has been led in the playoffs by senior guard Pat Meyer, who has scored 28 and 16 points in the Wolves’ two wins.
Girls 4-A Division
Kennedy vs. Crenshaw
At L.A. Sports Arena5:45 p.m.
After a bye in the first round, top-seeded Kennedy (20-2) routed Fremont, 79-42, on Wednesday. The Golden Cougars, who lost the 4-A title game last season, are led by Stacy Parson, a senior guard, and Diane DeCree. Crenshaw, which won the 3-A championship last season, is led by All-City performer Yolanda Kelley.
