Arturo Barrios won the fourth American Continental 10K, breaking away in the final 500 yards to set a world record for a loop course with a time of 27 minutes 41 seconds at Phoenix.
Barrios, 23, a native of Mexico City and former track star at Texas A&M;, shattered the mark of 27:43 set by Zach Barie of Tanzania in 1984.
Peter Koech and Mike Musyoki, both of Kenya, finished second and third in the identical time of 27:47. Former NCAA cross-country champion Ed Eyestone was fourth in 27:57 and Ireland’s John Treacy, Olympic silver medalist in the marathon, was fifth in 28:01.
