Texas Town Rejects Bid to Legalize Liquor, 2 to 1

OLTON, Tex. — Residents rejected a bid to legalize the sale of beer and packaged liquor by nearly a 2-1 margin in a referendum that attracted 95% of the city’s voters.
“We’re a small rural town with God-fearing people who believe in the work ethic,” Rosalyn Sorley, secretary of a group that opposed the legalization, said after Saturday’s election. “We just didn’t want it (liquor) for our community.”
The proposal to permit packaged liquor sales lost 531 to 288, Lamb County Clerk Bill Johnson said.
