“Yeager: An Autobiography.” Written and read by Chuck Yeager. Bantam. This audio adaptation of the best-selling book succeeds--just--because of its legendary subject. General Yeager, the “hillbilly” mechanic who became America’s greatest pilot, relates his remarkable history in a low-key, downhome manner (the reason he kept risking his life in experimental jets: “It’s a disgrace to quit”). The anecdotes--particularly his hairraising World War II exploits--are entertaining, but the tape is frustratingly superficial and brief, even with contributions from his wife and best pilot buddy.
