Bubka Soars to Record

MOSCOW — Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union shattered his world record in the pole vault today, clearing 19 feet, 8 3/4 inches at the Goodwill Games. Bubka’s spectacular jump came on his first attempt at the height and surpassed his record of 19-8 set July 13, 1985, in Paris.
