Maxicare Health Plans and Beverly Enterprises reported big increases in second-quarter net income and revenue as the nation’s largest investor-owned health maintenance organization and largest publicly traded nursing home chain, respectively, continued to benefit from health industry cost-containment measures. Los Angeles-based Maxicare reported that net income for the quarter ended June 30 nearly doubled to $9 million, compared to $4.6 million for the same quarter in 1985. At Pasadena-based Beverly Enterprises, net income rose 31% to $18.9 million for the three months ended June 30, compared to net income of $14.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
