SAN BERNARDINO — Brian Keith Smith, convicted of murdering a 10-year-old girl by burying her alive in an ice chest, escaped during the night from the Central County Jail, sheriff’s deputies said today.
Smith escaped from the jail’s visiting area between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Thursday, said Deputy Harry Hatch, who could not confirm reports that Smith removed screws from a window screen in the area, climbed out and walked from the jail. Smith, 25, was convicted June 30 of first-degree murder in the July, 1985, killing of Melissa Wakefield.
