Chapman Wins Soccer Opener

It took 60 minutes for the Chapman men’s soccer team to score in its season opener against Midwestern State, but less than three minutes later the Panthers had a 3-0 lead en route to a 3-1 first-round victory in the Far West Classic at Chapman Stadium.
The Panthers scored 15 minutes into the second period when Michael Sank took a pass from Scott McCrimmon and fired a shot past goalie Kevin Payne.
A minute and eight seconds after Sank scored, Moi Garcia connected on a penalty shot, and a little more than a minute later Rick Snyder scored on a breakaway.
Juan Velez scored Midwestern’s goal with 13:22 left.
In other first-round games, top-seeded Seattle Pacific beat Southern California College, 8-0, and Westmont defeated Sacramento State, 2-0.
In today’s winners’ bracket, Chapman plays Chico State at 7 p.m. and Westmont plays Seattle Pacific at 5 p.m. In the losers’bracket, Sacramento State plays Southern California College at 1 p.m. and Northeast Missouri plays Midwestern at 3.
