Memories of Days on Roller Skates

Roller skaters in warehouses are news--but not new to me.
In 1929, my first year in Los Angeles, I worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. at 9th and Boyle--now Olympic and Soto. Soto Street was not yet extended that far, and Sears’ building was under construction, and expanding.
I was stuck in a makeshift office that jutted into the warehouse on the fifth floor. To get to the restroom, we typists had to duck between roller skaters filling orders for mail-order customers.
The floor was made of wooden blocks about the size of bricks. The noise was deafening. My pay was $17 a week.
