Mancini In-Law, 81, Dragged to Safety in Mobile Home Fire

A live-in housekeeper dragged composer Henry Mancini’s elderly mother-in-law to safety when flames swept through their mobile home in the Malibu Riviera area, sheriff’s deputies reported this morning.
The deputies said that Josephine Roberts, 81, suffered second- and third-degree burns on her legs Christmas night when an electric blanket apparently shorted out, setting her bed on fire. Awakened by her screams, the housekeeper, Maria Sanchez, ran to the bedroom and pulled her outside.
Roberts was hospitalized at the Brotman Medical Center burn ward. Damage to the mobile home, which was largely destroyed, was estimated at $100,000.
