A San Diego man burned to death in his automobile Wednesday afternoon shortly after pulling the smoking vehicle to the side of Interstate 5 near Old Town, police said.
The victim, identified by the San Diego County coroner’s office as 28-year-old Eric Hibpshman of Ocean Beach, had been traveling north on I-5 about 2:45 p.m. when his car started smoking, according to the California Highway Patrol.
After Hibpshman pulled to the side of the road near the Old Town exit, the car apparently burst into flames, trapping him inside and preventing witnesses from rescuing him, police said.
A California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Wednesday night that an investigation is continuing.
