PCAA Roundup : Vaughns Leads Gauchos Past Pacific, 87-54

Brian Vaughns scored 23 points and hit 10 of 10 free throws as UC Santa Barbara defeated Pacific, 87-54, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game Saturday at Goleta.
The Gauchos improved to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
Brian Johnson added 14 points for Santa Barbara, making 4 of 5 baskets from three-point range. Brent Counts, the son of the former Laker Mel Counts, scored 18 points for Pacific (8-11, 4-6).
Carlton Davenport scored all of his 11 points in the first half as Santa Barbara moved out to a 40-22 lead by halftime.
Vaughns’ free-throw accuracy set a record at the Campus Events Center, which opened in 1979.
New Mexico St. 85, Utah St. 82--Johnny Roberson scored 26 points, including two free throws with three seconds left, to lift New Mexico State over Utah State at Las Cruces, N.M.
Utah State’s Danny Conway had a chance to tie the game with a three-point shot from midcourt, but the shot hit the backboard and bounded away.
New Mexico State improved to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in PCAA. Utah State is 11-11 and 4-6.
Steve McGlothin added 19 points for New Mexico State, while Utah State was led by Conway, who scored 21.
The Aggies led, 46-31, at halftime. In the second half, Utah pulled within 81-78 on Anderson’s three-pointer at 1:37.
