Lawndale : Staff to Aid Soup Kitchen
The City Council has directed its staff to assist the House of Yahweh soup kitchen in relocating from its current position near City Hall.
The soup kitchen, whose unkempt clients’ presence near City Hall has generated complaints, has proposed that the city seek to purchase surplus land from the state Department of Transportation and then sell or lease it for a nominal amount to the soup kitchen.
The council ordered the administration to compile a list of all properties in the city that might be suitable. The list is to include two Caltrans properties near 169th Street just east of the San Diego Freeway that House of Yahweh officials have their eye on. Caltrans has not declared the properties surplus, which is necessary before the city could attempt to buy them.
In addition, the council directed staff to assist the House of Yahweh in pursuing grants for its operation.
The soup kitchen feeds about 200 a day, dispenses canned goods and clothing to the needy and operates a thrift shop. It is located about 200 feet from City Hall.
