The California State Police celebrated their 100th anniversary with a full-dress review at the Capitol. Gov. George Deukmejian was presented with a special edition of a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver and a badge. The state police started in 1887 with two officers to patrol Capitol grounds. It has grown to 351 officers and 72 staff members who are supposed to protect state officials, employees and property. The force wants to recruit more women and minorities and to place two horse patrol officers in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, according to Chief Joseph Sandoval.
