Polls would close at the same time throughout the 48 contiguous states on presidential Election Day under legislation approved by a House subcommittee. The legislation, virtually identical to a measure that was derailed in the Senate last year after passage by the House, calls for all polling places in the 48 contiguous states to close at 9 p.m. EST. To give an additional hour of voting time in the West, the bill would extend daylight-saving time in the Pacific time zone in presidential election years for two weeks beyond its normal expiration in late October. Thus, the poll-closing time in California would be 7 p.m. PDT, which would be 9 p.m. EST.
