South Gate : School Contract Awarded
Construction is scheduled to start in July on a $6.6-million elementary school. The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has awarded a contract to Berry Construction Inc. of Upland to build the school, tentatively called South Gate New Elementary No. 1, on 5.4 acres at 9801 San Miguel Ave.
Most of the land has been cleared. However, a small number of residents still live in the area and are moving, said Roger Friermuth, project manager for the school district’s planning branch.
The new school will accommodate more than 1,000 students and include four kindergarten classrooms, 30 general classrooms, four special education classrooms, a library, multipurpose room, kitchen and administrative offices.
The school is part of the district’s building and expansion program aimed at relieving overcrowded conditions.
