An explosion flattened a grocery store and a neighboring three-story tenement in the South Bronx, killing six people and injuring at least 28 others. Up to seven people were feared trapped in the rubble. One survivor was trapped under the debris for six hours before being freed, and spoke with rescuers as hundreds of workers dug through a mountain of material with picks, chain saws and their bare hands. Cranes were brought in to clear the wreckage, and dogs were called in to help with the search. A utility company spokeswoman said a gas leak was reported at the grocery store about 20 minutes before the blast.
