A 12-year-old Lakeside boy was listed in critical condition at Children’s Hospital late Wednesday night as a result of an accidental gunshot wound to the head, suffered while he and a friend played with a handgun, police said.
The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when a small-caliber pistol that the victim and another 12-year-old boy had been playing with discharged, hitting the youth in the right side of the head, a spokesman for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said. Neither juvenile’s name was released.
The boy was taken to the hospital by Life Flight helicopter and later was listed in “critical, unstable condition,” according to a Children’s Hospital spokesman.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said the shooting was being treated as an accident, but that homicide officials were investigating.
