The front page article, “Mexico Builds Success Story on Quake Ruins,” (June 15) should be a source of everlasting shame for the city of Los Angeles. Somehow, a beleaguered economy, suffering the devastation of a major earthquake, staggering under a burden of massive foreign debt has been able to find the means of creating housing for 28,000 families driven to the outdoors after the earthquake of less than two years ago.

In contrast, the front page of the Metro section documents the difficulties which the prosperous and self-congratulating city of Los Angeles has experienced in attempting to house a mere 600 homeless people in tents, while totally ignoring an estimated 10,000 more too frightened or proud to accept the city’s largess.

Perhaps the first priority for our elected officials should be a trip to Mexico City to find out how it is possible to do so much for people with so little with which to do it.
