Reagan Urges Congress to Restore U.N.’s $79.2 Million

WASHINGTON — President Reagan asked Congress today to restore almost $79.2 million in U.S. funding for the United Nations in response to U.N. adoption of financial and administrative reforms demanded by the United States.
By act of Congress, the money--a portion of the regular annual U.S. contribution to the United Nations and its agencies--had been withheld pending requested improvements in financial and administrative procedures.
The White House said the reforms instituted to date “constitute a sufficient first step towards fulfilling the intent” of that law.
Reagan also requested an additional $21.7 million “to restore the shortfall of the U.S. contribution to the United Nations resulting from the decline in the value of the dollar.”
