Thai soap operas should stop featuring effeminate men as part of the fight against AIDS, a group of Thai lawmakers said in Bangkok on Wednesday. Public Health Committee Chairman Phaithoon Mokhamakkun said prominent roles for effeminate male actors common in television soap operas here were an inappropriate influence on young viewers and should end. Thais’ traditional tolerance of homosexuals and transsexuals has ebbed since AIDS was detected here in 1984, he said.
