The World : Syrian Diplomat Slain
A gunman shot and killed the first secretary of the Syrian Embassy in Belgium outside his Brussels home. Police said Antanios Hanna was shot at least four times and died on the sidewalk. An anonymous caller to the news agency Belga said that Hanna was a secret agent and that the Syrian Moujahedeen (Syrian Holy Warriors) killed him. The French news agency Agence France-Presse said a caller who telephoned its bureau later said that Hanna, 38, was slain by the People’s Moujahedeen. It was believed to be the first public reference to a group by either name. The main organized opposition to President Hafez Assad’s government has come from the underground Muslim Brotherhood, which the Syrian authorities have tried to stamp out.
