Pasadena : City Targets Housing Bias

The Board of Directors has asked the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance that would ban housing discrimination not only for race, religion, sexual orientation and age but also against handicapped people, AIDS victims and families with children.
The ordinance was proposed by the Fair Housing Council of the San Gabriel Valley, a nonprofit housing advocacy group that promotes equal opportunity in housing.
Sandra Romero, the agency’s executive director, said the intent of the ordinance is to duplicate state and federal laws on the municipal level.
The city attorney’s office has recommended against the ordinance, saying it would probably be held invalid because it would be preempted by the existing state fair housing law.
