Orange County College Roundup : UC Irvine’s Balanced Offense Proves Too Much for Loyola Marymount

Five players scored goals for UC Irvine as the Anteaters defeated Loyola Marymount, 5-1, in a men’s nonconference soccer match at Loyola.

Badi Jeffers, Mike Perisi and Fred Bonilla scored in the first half, and Steve Shaw scored early in the second half as Irvine (5-9) opened a 4-0 lead.

Tom Stevenson scored for Loyola Marymount (3-9-2). Jim Malave scored Irvine’s final goal.

Mike Gartlin had five saves in goal for Irvine.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California 4, Christ College Irvine 0--Bill Simpson had two goals and James Helmuth a goal and two assists for Southern California (6-8-2, 3-0-1) at Irvine.

Simpson scored in the first half on an assist from Helmuth as SCC led, 1-0, at halftime. Simpson had an unassisted goal early in the second half, and Kevin Grimes scored on an assist from Helmuth as SCC took a 3-0 lead.

Helmuth scored the final goal late in the game for SCC, which is in second place in the conference, one point behind Westmont. The two teams play Saturday at SCC at 2 p.m.

Christ College Irvine is 6-8, 1-4.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 1, Chapman 0--Tim Hire scored a goal 21:01 into the game to lead San Luis Obispo (4-0-1 in conference), which was outshot by Chapman, 29-4, at San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo goalie Eric Nielson had 15 saves. Chapman is 7-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference.
