Nobel Prize for President Arias

How delighted I was at the news that President Oscar Arias Sanchez of Costa Rica won the Nobel Peace award. He is a courageous man attempting to bring together such a wide divergence of ideas to make peace.
Jorge Castaneda’s article (Op-Ed Page, Oct. 15) applauds him justly, but also wisely points out that without U.S. backing it cannot reach fruition. How can the people of the United States reach the Central American people and say we are behind this move to join hands for the saving of lives and the restoring of economic health to these embattled countries?
President Reagan would not lose face if he could say “Yes, it is time for peace to come through negotiation, not war.”
