Santa Monica : Reprise for Dawn’s Early Light
- Share via
Santa Monica may have started something this year when it decided to hold its Fourth of July fireworks show by dawn’s early light.
The city manager’s staff will recommend at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that the 5 a.m. staging be continued every year.
The city’s fireworks extravaganza began at 5 a.m. this year to avoid problems of crowd control and traffic gridlock that have plagued previous celebrations.
City Manager John Jalili said the experiment was a success and attracted about 50,000 people.
Concerns that holding the fireworks display at that hour would be like “giving a party and asking people not to come” were allayed, he said.
