Handcuffed and blowing kisses to his teen-age daughter, former New Jersey state Sen. David Friedland appeared in the Brooklyn courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Allyne Ross and agreed to return to Newark to face fraud charges pending since he faked his death and fled the country in 1985. The Hudson County Democrat was captured last week on the Maldive Islands south of India after leading federal marshals on a two-year chase through resorts on three continents. Friedland, 50, faces seven years in prison for soliciting a $350,000 kickback from a Teamsters Union pension fund in New Brunswick. He also agreed to appear today in Newark federal court for arraignment on fraud indictments charging Friedland conspired to bilk the same union fund while he was acting as an informant in federal probes of labor racketeering and corruption.
