College Basketball Roundup : Arizona Bounces Back, Beats Cal

Anthony Cook scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for No. 1 Arizona as the Wildcats came back from their first conference loss of the season to beat California, 74-62, in a Pacific 10 game Sunday at Berkeley.

The Wildcats’ No. 1 national ranking became shaky with an 82-74 loss to Stanford on Thursday night. But Nevada Las Vegas, Brigham Young and Duke, the 2-3-4 teams in last week’s rankings, also lost this weekend.

Arizona improved to 21-2 overall and 10-1 in the Pac-10, while Cal dropped to 6-13 and 3-8.

Cook, a 6-9 junior forward, made six consecutive points, on a field goal and four free throws, after Cal closed to within 60-52 with 5:35 remaining.

Cook had 11 points in the first half, helping Arizona take a 42-28 lead. The Wildcats led by as many as 19 points in the second half.

Arizona had a 40-21 edge over Cal in rebounds and committed only five turnovers to Cal’s 15.

Duke 70, Notre Dame 61--Billy King keyed a late rally with back-to-back jumpers and held Notre Dame’s David Rivers scoreless in the second half as the Blue Devils (16-3) turned back the Irish (12-7) at Durham, N.C.

Rivers, averaging 23 points a game, hit only 3 of 17 shots and scored 9 points.

Notre Dame led, 35-32, at halftime and went ahead, 48-44, with 12:30 remaining. Quin Snyder hit a three-pointer for Duke and King put the Blue Devils ahead for the first time in the second half, 49-48, with a jumper in the lane.

Rivers turned the ball over, and King hit his second jumper to give the Blue Devils a 51-48 lead with 10:33 to play. Duke never trailed again.

Danny Ferry led the Blue Devils with 16 points.

Joe Fredrick, a sophomore guard who entered the game averaging 5.3 points, scored a career-high 23 points to pace Notre Dame.

Houston 81, Virginia 58--Horace Chaney scored 18 points and Tom Grant added 15 for the Cougars (10-9) who took charge with a 15-2 spurt that gave them a 45-24 lead over the Cavaliers (12-11) at the half at Houston.
