The Nation : U.S. Freeing $75 Million to Aid Homeless
- Share via
The Department of Housing and Urban Development said that it is making an additional $75 million available to state and local governments as well as nonprofit groups to aid the homeless. The $75 million will be split into $60 million for transitional housing for the homeless and $15 million for permanent housing for the handicapped homeless. Of the $60 million in transitional housing funds, HUD said, $30.8 million is for housing projects that serve homeless people who have been deinstitutionalized or have mental disabilities, $20 million will be available for programs aiding homeless families with children, and $9.2 million will be available to aid the homeless generally. HUD officials said the $15 million for housing the handicapped homeless doubles the amount currently available for such programs. About $15 million was made available last October.
