Japan and the United States signed an agreement that requires Japan to assume a larger share of the cost of U.S. military bases in Japan. When the protocol signed in Tokyo is fully implemented, Japan’s financial contribution will cover about 40% of the cost of maintaining the bases, the U.S. Embassy said. The new agreement follows a pledge by Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita during a visit to Washington in January to increase Japan’s contribution toward maintaining U.S. forces in Japan.
