Soviets Conduct A-Test

MOSCOW — The Soviet Union on Saturday detonated a 20-kiloton nuclear test device beneath the Semipalatinsk proving grounds on the steppes of Kazakhstan in Soviet Central Asia, the official news agency Tass reported.
“The goal of the testing was upgrading military technology,” Tass said of the 6:30 a.m. explosion. Tass provided no further details.
