Greg Ropes has been named to replace Ken Barone as basketball coach at Newbury Park High, athletic director Bill Manzer said Monday.
Ropes previously coached at Camarillo during the 1986-87 season. Filling in for John Harbour, Ropes guided the Scorpions to a 4-16 record. They finished sixth in the Marmonte League with a 3-9 mark.
“Greg’s got an extremely good attitude about what high school sports are all about,” Manzer said. “He realizes it’s a time for fun and memories for kids.”
Ropes has also coached, among others, the golf and softball teams at Thousand Oaks, where he teaches, and the women’s basketball team at Cal Lutheran.
Barone resigned Feb. 22 after coaching separate stints totaling 11 years. Newbury Park finished 13-12 last season, 4-8 in league play.
