Desert Protection

I read with amazement (Sept. 2) Rep. Ron Packard’s (R-Carlsbad) remarks concerning the proposed Potrero Los Pinos airport site.
Your article quoted him as saying: “This place simply should not be built into an airport. It would ruin the wilderness and would be extremely expensive.”
I wonder why the congressman is so concerned about protecting a part of the wilderness of the Cleveland National Forest and does not support the Desert Protection Act (HR 780), which provides lasting federal protection for one of the most fragile, beautiful and ecologically unique areas of this country.
