Santa Clara 35, Bell-Jeff 7--Tailback Kwinn Knight scored three touchdowns and rushed for a game-high 121 yards in nine carries to lead Santa Clara at Burroughs High.
Knight, a senior, also had two interceptions, caught three passes for 33 yards and completed a pass for 30 yards on a halfback-option play. The Saints had 346 yards in offense, including 100 yards passing by quarterback Tim Gutierrez, who completed nine of 20 passes.
Trailing, 35-0, the Guards scored their lone touchdown on running back Earl Matthews’ 74-yard run with 2:30 left. The Saint defense had allowed only nine yards rushing before Matthews’ jaunt.
Guard wide receiver Jason Stanley caught five passes for 70 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter after developing cramps in both legs.
Bell-Jeff quarterback Rod Chapman completed 10 of 24 passes for 88 yards and the Guards compiled 171 total offensive yards.
The Guards had nine penalties for 71 yards and Santa Clara was penalized eight times for 98 yards.
