BEIJING — China’s Academy of Sciences has decided to dismiss from his post as research fellow a prominent dissident who has taken refuge in the U.S. Embassy, Beijing Radio reported Tuesday.
It said the academy also decided to strip Fang Lizhi of the title of “young and middle-aged technical and managerial expert who had made outstanding contributions” and of the special privileges that went with the title.
Fang and his wife, Li Shuxian, a professor at Beijing University, took refuge in the U.S. Embassy shortly after troops and tanks crushed student-led protests last June. The Beijing government has accused Fang of being one of the main organizers of the pro-democracy protest movement.
