CHANDIGARH, India — Rajiv Gandhi, in one of his last acts as prime minister, ordered charges of conspiracy in his mother’s assassination dropped against a newly elected Sikh parliamentarian associated with the Punjab separatist movement, officials said today.
Officials said Gandhi transmitted the instructions Tuesday to the Home Ministry, pointing out that Simranjit Singh Mann had sworn allegiance to the constitution in order to run for the Tarn Taran seats in the lower house of Parliament.
Gandhi submitted his resignation early today after his party’s humiliating losses in parliamentary elections. (Story, A9.)
