California IN BRIEF : SANTA CRUZ : Another Aftershock Rattles Bay Area

An aftershock from the Oct. 17 San Francisco Bay Area earthquake rattled residents Saturday but caused no damage or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 3.6 temblor was centered in the Santa Cruz Mountains 12 miles southwest of San Jose. It was in the north end of the fault involved in the October quake. A spokesman said there have been thousands of aftershocks, and they are continuing, but diminishing. Although Saturday’s temblor was relatively small, authorities said it was felt by a large number of people, possibly because it occurred just after noon, when people were awake. Three aftershocks were recorded in San Benito County near Hollister on Friday but were relatively unnoticed. The largest, at 4:37 a.m., registered 4.1 at UC Berkeley.
