The New York Jets, mired in losses and criticism, received permission from the New England Patriots to interview Dick Steinberg for a job as general manager.
Steinberg, director of player development for the Patriots since 1981, is widely considered by NFL executives as one of the top assessors of talent in the league. The Jets have operated without a general manager since 1977.
